If you haven’t heard of LipSense yet, it’s probably because you don’t know anyone who jumped into this product line like a bird for a berry! Luckily for me, my aunt was one of those people. ; )
LipSense is, as described on the official website, “the premier product of SeneGence and is unlike any conventional lipstick, stain or color. As the original long-lasting lip color, it is waterproof, does not kiss-off, smear-off, rub-off or budge-off! Create your own color palette by combining colors from over 50 shades.” So today I’m here to give you my opinion of the product and how it stacks up to that hefty description!
Let me start by saying that I have become pretty familiar with the LipSense colors and glosses over the past few months as I am fortunate enough to live and work with a distributor! #blessed! I want you guys to know that I feel pretty confident in my knowledge and experience with the product, so you can trust you’re getting a pretty qualified, and (always!) honest review! I only say this because I feel it’s important to know everything you can about a product before you go shelling out your money! Here goes…
• What am I buying? •
When you first buy LipSense, you’ll be buying a color and a gloss to top and set the color. The glosses contain Shae Butter and Vitamin E which improves the longevity of the LipSense color while moisturizing your lips. Also available is an “Ooops! Remover” product to remove the product, but it’s not totally necessary. Colors are $25, and glosses are $20 (you won’t need a new gloss for every color you buy unless you want a different color gloss), and the Ooops! Remover is $10. You can buy a bundle of all three for $55. So yeah, that’s a solid price tag, let’s see if it’s worth it!
• How does it work?•
The application process for LipSense isn’t your typical slather on and go deal, but doing it right is what makes this product what it is. You’ll apply the color first, and then the gloss to top it off, but there’s a method to be mastered if you want to get all you can from LipSense. The color needs to be applied in 3 light coats, no swiping back and forth all crazy and no rubbing or smacking your lips together, not yet! You’ll need to watch an application video first to best understand the technique. After your three coats are carefully applied, you’ll apply your gloss topper. The gloss can be applied regularly, just like any other gloss, slather it on there and smack away! Then you’ll see the magic!
• What’s your experience? •
My first time trying LipSense was over two months ago, and it was, to my surprise, a super positive experience! My aunt showed up to our office raving about her new lipstick and asked if I wanted to try …well duh! : D
The color I tried first was “Brick” (a beautiful deep red), and I was truly amazed. I’m a “nudey pink” kinda girl, and a good red is hard to find for me, but this one was it! I applied my 3 coats of color very carefully (if you go out of the lines with this bright red, you’re stuck unless you use the “Oops! Remover”). I was careful to keep my lips parted, line them how I wanted and make sure to get the outer corners and inner sides of my lips coated as well. The color is very sticky at first but feels completely fine after you apply the gloss.
It wasn’t until I applied the gloss that I figured out this product was like no other. The “Glossy Gloss”, which is what I used, is completely clear with a white doe foot applicator (your typical lip gloss applicator wand). I had my doubts, my lips were coated deep red, I didn’t want to ruin my aunt’s crystal clear gloss and little white fuzzy applicator.
I applied like I was told, and was amazed when it came away with no red from my lips! I’m telling you, this color doesn’t budge! Seriously, no lie!
After applying the gloss, my lips felt comfortable and moisturized. I went about my day at work and didn’t even re-apply another coat of gloss (which is recommended every few hours to keep the color locked in). On my way home I smoked a cigarette (I know, I know! I have since quit! Almost 3 weeks down!), and was again stunned! I smoked half the cigarette and took a picture and sent it to my aunt! If you’re a smoker, you know there’es nothing you can do, no matter what lipstick or chapstick you’re wearing, you’re gonna see some color on that bad boy! This was when it hit me again, this stuff was no joke! After dinner, a nap and a little cuddlin’ with my fur child, I took the other picture you’ll see here. Needless to say, I was convinced. I jumped on my aunt’s distributor Facebook group, posted my pictures and raved my heart out!
Now, I’m not going to say it’s all downhill from there, but let me explain my further experience with LipSense. I’ve deduced that it all comes down to the color you choose. There are hits and misses, but the misses can usually be worked with to perform how you’d like, and the hits are legit out of the park!
In my (and my aunt and cousins) experience, it seems that the deeper or bolder colors perform the best. The color range is fabulous. I told you I was into nudes and pinks, and there are several gorgeous options to choose from, but the lightest nudes/pinks don’t sit well on my lips. They seem to be more sheer with less color payoff, and then break up and crackle once I apply the gloss topper.
I have heard that there are ways to work with the light colors to make them perform better, like using the “Icicle” color (which is clear, but NOT a gloss topper) as a base before you apply the color to keep it from breaking up on your lips. I have yet to try this technique because I’m fine using my regular lipsticks/glosses to get a nude look, and using LipSense for my more bold colors that I want to stay all day.
• How do I get it off?! •
It’s not easy! But that’s not necessarily a bad thing! The “Ooops! Remover” is made to remove the product, but I’ve found that the “Neutrogena Original Formula Transparent Facial Bar” works best of any other soap/remover. I just wet my lips, rub the bar directly on my lips and then wipe with a wet washcloth.
• What’s the color selection? •
LipSense comes in a wide range of colors, so you’re sure to find something that speaks to you! Thirty-six shades are available, from the bare nudes to bright pinks, reds, oranges and purples to blue and black! The glosses come in several different finishes as well, (Matte, Pearl, Pink Glitter, Gold Glitter, Rose, and Sand, to name a few) so you can change up the tint or finish of your color.
While I find most of the colors to be beautiful and right up my alley, some just don’t work well for me (Bravo, Bombshell, Bombshell Diamond, Cappucino, Pink Champagne). If you do like more neutral nudes and pinks, the best for me have been Bella, First Love, Nude, Praline Rose and Dawn Rising. If you’re after a good red, Brick, Blu-Red, Rhubarb, Fly Girl and Crimson Red are all winners for me.
The shades come in a few different finishes – matte, shimmer, and frost. I’ve found that as for the mattes, the bright and bold colors are best, and the lightest shimmers and frosts are the ones I have trouble with.
Notable favorites: Bella, Napa, Brick, Praline Rose, Precious Topaz, First Love, Apple Cider and Nude.
• Who is this for? •
I can’t say this is for those of you who like to slap on chapstick or gloss and run out the door. The application does take a little longer and requires more attention than regular lipstick application, but once you’re done, you’re literally set for the day apart from reapplication of gloss every once in a while (which is the simple part).
If you’re into makeup and like having color on your lips, I’d say definitely give this a shot. If you’re only going to wear that red lip once in a blue moon, you might not want to pay the price tag for this one. On the other hand, if it’s for special occasions and you’ll need something that lasts and doesn’t budge, this is a must!
• Final Thoughts: Is it really worth it? •
To me? Yes! It’s not a lip product I’ll wear every day, simply because the bright and bolds work best for me and I don’t rock a red lip on the regular; but the price is worth it for me to have one good gloss (Pearl), a good red, deep neutral and bright pinkish red for that sweet summer tan!
Contrary to myself, my aunt comes into work every day with a different color or combination of colors she’s mixed herself by layering over another, and they work wonderfully every day! When I say this doesn’t budge, I mean you can apply it and then rub your lips with the back of your hand pretty vigorously and literally, nothing comes off, no exaggeration! This means no more lip stains on your coffee cup, no fussing over lipstick reapplication after lunch, and no worrying about smudging or bleeding lines. P
Plain and simple, LipSense STAYS PUT.
I’ve never used anything like this product, and I have more than an entire drawer full of drug store and high-end lip products. My closest comparison would be the Kat Von D Liquid Lipsticks, but they’re still pretty far off, and also only come in a matte/drying finish. Kat Von D Liquid Lips do last fairly well throughout the day, but you will still have those marks that come off on your cups and you’ll want to touch up here and there after eating.
If you’re interested in buying LipSense, I’d say it’s definitely best if you can meet with a distributor and test any colors you’re interested in. That way, you’ll be positive you’ve made the right choice, and I can pretty much guarantee you’ll be satisfied from there!
If you’re unable to meet with a distributor, I hope I’ve given you enough insight in this post to help you choose what you want. There are also tons of videos and photos available that show the colors on different skin tones with different gloss finishes that help tons, just google “LipSense (the color name in question)”.
If you’ve made it this far, thank you so much for reading! I talk about this product pretty regularly to others who are interested, and I’m happy to be able to write it all down for you to see, too!
